o you think this is an issue for traffic and blog quality in general, or is it specific to converting traffic to sales?
I think it's specific to converting search engine traffic, whether that conversion is through sales, subscribing, etc. If the blog as a whole matches what they were looking for, they're more likely to take action.
If I don’t sell anything, is it okay to have a poorly defined/maintained niche?
Personal blogs have a lot of leeway. There, I think it's more about how you present your material, and less about sticking to a specific focus. If people like your style, they'll stick around even if specific posts aren't interesting to them.

Court, looks like you do a good job on your blog keeping the content on track! That is critical for long-term success.

So so true! There is no better way to kill your RSS feed count than writing off-topic posts. Regular readers always want to find the same type of material.
