I always wondered how Google really worked to determine the page rank. This is kind of frightening to know that someone like John Chow could be nocked off like that. I hope to make it to the top but I also hope to always stay there.

I'd be surprised if John's earnings went down even if Google dropped his site from their index. He's at the point where search engine traffic is a small portion of his readership. But I don't doubt he'll come up with a new way to boost his search engine positioning.

I agree with what Jay said. You're going to help him get back to number 1, which imho is good. He deserves it. I've been a long time reader and continue to.

I completely agree with you. Google bots likes only links which are natural. But John Chow has already build a tons of regular visitors to his blog. Even though search engines doesn't send traffic he will survive in thsi niche.

Randall, I'm sure John expected Google to close the loophole he was using to game his search engine results positions eventually. He was too blatant about it for them to not take notice. But I don't think it'll hurt his blog income any. If anything, he'll get a flood of new traffic from people writing about how he's not #1 for "make money online" anymore. :-)

Man, I'm sorry to see this happen to Chow. He truly is a awesome guy, and he worked so hard to his search rankings. I'm sure everything will work itself out though. Great post!
